Dewatering licence unlocks construction at a Leicestershire sewage treatment works
AnonymousLeicestershire, England

The client was commissioned by Severn Trent Water to construct new assets at a sewage treatment works in Leicestershire, some of which required excavation below the groundwater table. Envireau reviewed, identified, and secured the necessary licencing requirements, enabling construction to proceed.
Challenge
It was crucial to identify whether the proposed excavations below the groundwater table would require dewatering, which in turn would allow for the identification of the necessary regulatory requirements, before work could commence. Without the correct licences in place, the client risked delays to excavation and potential non-compliance with environmental regulations.
Approach
To assess the requirement for dewatering, Envireau carried out a thorough hydrogeological review. The review concluded that groundwater abstraction would be necessary, and that an abstraction licence would be required to ensure compliance.
A robust Hydrogeological Impact Assessment (HIA) was also prepared to support the abstraction licence application, incorporating a detailed hydrological and hydrogeological evaluation of the potential effects of the proposed groundwater abstraction on site conditions and the surrounding water environment.
All different options for discharge were assessed, including a review of exemptions.
Outcome
Following this review, Envireau secured a full abstraction licence, permitting the client to abstract groundwater at a rate of 900 m3/day. It was decided to discharge through the sewage treatment works under consent from Severn Trent, which avoided the need to apply for a discharge permit. This allowed the client to proceed with construction at the site in compliance with its environmental and regulatory requirements.
